Properties and grade yield of lumber from a 27-year-old slash pine plantation

This study was undertaken to determine the yield by grade and flexural properties of lumber obtained from trees of a 27-year-old slash pine plantation with 6 by 6 feet original spacings. The study provided additional information of the lumber compliance to Southern Pine Inspection Bureau (SPIB) structural requirements for its visual grade. The results indicate that the lumber meets the flexural SPIB requirements for the visual grades obtained. The obtained high quality of lumber with the exceptional high grade distribution might be due to the original spacing (6 ft. by 6 ft.) of the plantation, which produced wood of relatively high density with relatively fewer and smaller knots, and also to the stand’s geographical location near the coastal region, which is known to produce smaller juvenile core in the trees. These observations however, need to be verified with additional studies.
