Thirty chemical formulations including pentachlorophenol were evaluated for their ability to prevent decay of western redcedar sapwood during and after 2 years’ exposure on a test fence. Techniques used were an Aspergillus niger bioassay and a modified soil block test. Four chemicals (Kathon 930, TBTO, Amical 48, and NW 100 SS) provided protection equivalent to pentachlorophenol, while five (Busan 1009, Busan 1030, Cunap, Cu-8, and Arquad C-50) provided slightly less protection.
