A colorimetric assay using chromotrophic acid as an indicator for hexavalent chromium was developed. At room temperature, early complete chromium reduction occurred in CCA-C-treated sawdust within 4 hours in Douglas-fir heartwood, 24 hours in western hemlock heartwood and sapwood, and 48 hours in Douglas-fir sapwood. Heating the sawdust to 70?C 12 hours after treatment resulted in early complete reduction within 1 hour. Little or no subsequent reduction occurred in samples treated and stored at 2?C.
