Rotary-cut aspen (Populus tremuloides) and red alder (Alnus rubra) veneer (0.2 in. thick), and nominal 4/4 California black oak (Quercus kelloggii) boards were press- (platen) dried using 1/4-inch-thick vented and nonvented chrome caul plates. Three platen temperatures (250?, 300?, and 350?F) were investigated in the veneer-drying portion of the experiment, while drying time and platen pressure were held constant. Platen temperature, platen pressure, and drying time were all held constant for the oak portion of the experiment. Differences in moisture loss obtained using the vented and nonvented cauls were not statistically significant for either the veneer or the oak boards. The most significant variable affecting moisture loss during veneer press-drying was platen temperature.
