Surveys of West Virginia’s wood products industry were conducted in 1983, 1986, and 1993 to gather information on kiln-drying facilities and activities within the state. Comparison of the results of those surveys reveals that the number of dry kilns in the state has expanded by 230 percent between 1982 and 1992. The volume of lumber kiln-dried annually has increased over the same time period by 2.9 times. Changes taking place in the industry include acceptance of dehumidification drying, as a commercially viable method for drying hardwood lumber. In addition, many of the conventional dry kilns built in the state since 1983 are heated by wood-fueled boilers.
