This paper describes a computer program to grade southern pine lumber. The program as developed as part of a research project investigating the benefits of scanning southern pine logs for interior defects. It evaluates two-dimensional and three-dimensional lumber defects as described in the Southern Pine Inspection Bureau Grading Rules for Finish, Boards, Structural Light Framing, and Structural Joists and Planks. Potential applications include evaluation and process control at headrigs, resaws, edgers, and trimsaws in sawmills. Applications may also include on-line lumber grading in mills and the training of lumber graders.
