Lumber sawn from water-stored red oak logs develops non-microbial sapstain sooner and at a more rapid rate than lumber sawn from freshly cut logs. Non-microbial sapstain can be prevented in lumber from freshly cut logs with a 5-minute dip in 5 percent sodium bisulfite, whereas 10 percent sodium bisulfite is needed for lumber cut from water-stored logs. Sodium bisulfite is not effective in completely preventing sapstain in lumber sawn from logs that have been water-stored for more than 3 to 4 weeks.
