Taper peeling of plywood peeler blocks to increase yield and value

Roundup losses in veneer peeling are reported to be about 11 percent. This material is presently utilized as fishtail core veneer, chips, or fuel. Taper peeling is a method of recovering full-length sheets of veneer from that part of the loss due to taper volume. A substantial amount of taper volume in a peeler block can be recovered as full-width sheets by peeling parallel to the tapered surface and advancing the knife to provide a thicker veneer at the large diameter end and thinner veneer at the small diameter end. This process appears to be technically feasible and within the capacity of current technology.
