A feasibility study of composites produced from telephone directory paper, plastics, and other adhesives

The feasibility of producing composite boards from recycled telephone directories was investigated. Pages were bonded as sheets or in shredded form using either sheet plastic from recycled grocery shopping bags (polyethylene) and plastic food wrap (polyvinylidene), ground plastic, or conventional wood adhesives. The composite materials were tested for bending strength, resistance to water uptake, and thickness swelling. Pages bonded with plastic sheets gave the highest bending properties, comparable to commercial particleboard. The composites showed high sensitivity to moisture.
