Use of wood raw materials by the U.S. millwork industry in 1990

Producers of millwork products in the United States were surveyed to: 1) estimate quantities of wood raw materials consumed in 1990; 2) indicate expected trends in consumption of these materials over the next 5 years; and 3) identify concerns and problems with supplies. In 1990, millwork producers were estimated to have consumed 24 million board feet (BF) of logs; 2.6 and 0.9 billion BF of softwood and hardwood lumber, respectively; 173 million of veneer; 96 million ft.2 of plywood; and 133, 68, 45, and 19 million ft. 2, respectively, of particleboard, medium density fiberboard, hardboard, and oriented strandboard. Of 17 factors affecting business operation, respondents ranked concerns with wood raw materials in 8th place overall. However, this concern was ranked more important as establishment size increased — it was the top concern of firms with sales exceeding $15 million. Respondents also felt they will face increased competition from nonwood products, that it is increasingly difficult to find wood of desired quality, and that use of nonwood materials will grow. When asked about the impact of reduced supplies of timber from federal lands in the West, they indicated it will be more difficult to obtain quality wood and they would shift to other species.
