Five locations in North Carolina and Virginia were used to study weight loss in stored pulpwood during the four seasons of the year. The goal of the study was to quantify weight loss due to drying during the four seasons. Trailer loads of wood were set up at each location and weighed weekly for 10 to 12 consecutive weeks. Weight loss exceeded 20 percent for soft-hardwood and pine during late spring and summer. Hard-hardwood weight losses generally did not exceed 15 percent regardless of the season. Equations were developed to model weight loss, given the date entered into storage and the number of days in storage.
