Variability of particleboard properties from single- and mixed-species processes

Twenty particleboard panels (4 ft. by 8 ft. by 5/8 in.) were sampled from one single-species and one mixed-species particleboard plant over a 3-month production period. These 40 panels were used to assess the influence of species variation on variability of physical and mechanical properties of particleboard. As expected, uncontrolled species variation in the mixed-species particleboard resulted in increased water soak thickness swell (TS) variation. However, modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), and internal bond (IB) were less variable in the mixed-species particleboard than in the single-species particleboard, due to the use of chips as start furnish and large particles in the core of the mixed-species particleboard. In addition variability of linear expansion (LE) was comparable for both particleboard products.
