Industrial classification and coding systems are used by the metalworking, aircraft, and electronics industries to facilitate Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM). A classification and coding system specific to furniture and other wood parts has been developed. The system addresses part type, part material content, part geometry, and form features. Part populations can be classified and coded to establish a database of manufacturing information. This database can facilitate a variety of CAM activities. These include Computer-Assisted Process Planning, part costing, and Group Technology applications such as cellular manufacturing. The ability to quickly capture, retrieve, and use information concerning the design characteristics and/or the manufacturing requirements of individual parts is significant for the furniture industry because of the frequent introduction of new products.
