Tool forces and edge recession from cutting medium density fiberboard

Medium density fiberboard (MDF) wears out tungsten carbide tools rapidly. A turning test along the edge of MDF was undertaken to determine optimal rake angle(s). When cutting MDF, tool wear, as measured by edge recession and cutting forces, is less for rake angles between (but not including) 10 and 30 degrees, and as the depth of cut, i.e., crossfeed, increases for C-2 tungsten carbide.
