Exposure of creosoted Douglas-fir panels in Oregon coastal waters: a preliminary report

Douglas-fir test panels were treated with creosote at one of five retention levels and immersed at three locations along the Oregon coast. After 2 years, panels with a retention of 321 kg/m3 (20 lb./ft.3), as specified by AWPA, effectively repelled attack by marine borers (Limnoria spp.), but several panels with a retention of 160 kg/m3 (10 lb./ft.3) were attacked internally by shipworms (Bankia setacea). Although Limnoria tripunctata lightly attacked some creosoted panels, its attack of untreated controls was significant at only one site. Gas chromatographic analyses revealed an absence of significant migration of creosote components from the panels after 2 years. However, components with low boiling points had much lower concentrations in wood that had been immersed than in the original creosote. The study is continuing.
