Transverse scanning for automatic detection of general slope of grain in lumber

Transverse scanning is proposed as an alternative to longitudinal scanning for inline detection of general slope of grain in lumber using electronic sensing devices. The merit of this new concept was addressed by comparing visual grades indicated by a commercial slope-of-grain indicator to target grades based on true grain direction, using a sample of 60 dimension lumber specimens. A data-processing method was developed to establish the general slope of grain value for the piece, using the grain angle data collected at individual locations across the wide face of a piece of lumber. The technical feasibility of transverse scanning for automatic detection of general slope of grain was demonstrated.
