Nine kiln-drying runs were completed, six with 3-foot-long and three with 8-foot-long Pacific Coast hemlock 4- by 4-inch squares, for the purpose of developing kiln schedules. The results showed that they can be dried from green (approximately 70%) to an average moisture content of 18 percent in less than 7 days, with a minimum level of casehardening and very little surface checking. The process can be carried out in any steam kiln fitted with controllers that allow gradual changes in temperatures over time.
