A number of material and process variables were investigated to determine their effect on the selection of raw materials for fillers in adhesives used to bond structural plywood. The variables included were: physical and chemical characteristics of the fillers, composition of the adhesive mix, type of adhesive application, degree of prepress tack, assembly and hot-press conditions, adhesive spread rate, accelerated-aging method, and panel knife wear. The fillers examined included various blends of nut shells and nutshell-mineral combinations. These fillers were compared to a furfural residue filler, which is considered a standard.
