This paper reviews research and application publications in lumber drying that have been published during the last 10 years. It is divided into seven subject areas: Manuals and general articles, Predrying treatments, Schedules, Process control, Energy use, and Post drying. Topics covered in the Predrying treatments section include presurfacing, presteaming, surface coatings, moisture pallets, warp control techniques, presorting, and miscellaneous treatments. Drying techniques discussed include air, forced-air, solar, dehumidification, high temperature, vacuum, radio frequency, press, pressure steam, and jet-drying, and low-temperature predrying. The long length of time, and consequently the number of publications, since the last review made it difficult to provide detailed summaries of all research areas. More detail has been provided in four areas: temperature drop across the load/zone kilns, bacterial infections and appropriate drying techniques, top loading, and acoustic emission as a potential process control technique.
