The ability of one biological control agent and selected chemical formulations to prevent microbial discoloration of freshly sawn lumber was evaluated on hem-fir and Douglas-fir wood over a 180-day test period. The biological control agent was generally unable to protect either species from discoloration. Hem-fir proved to be the most difficult species to protect, and most chemicals were unable to provide protection for this species mix throughout the full test period. Most chemicals were able to protect freshly sawn Douglas-fir lumber for the first 30 days after sawing, but protection declined with increased storage time. Only a few chemicals were capable of protecting wood against stain for the entire test period, and these were generally applied at elevated concentrations.
