Within a forested landscape, a variety of silvicultural systems can have a positive effect on habitat diversity. Also important are short and long rotation lengths, which provide a range of forest ages, and a forest composition of multiple tree species. Leaving buffers around special areas and streams, maintaining downed wood, dead snags and live cavities, and retaining non-commercial soft-mast tree species promotes habitat diversity. Managing wildlife populations which can alter their habitat allows the system to function naturally. On a landscape scale, landowners with a variety of objectives being flexible with a variety of silvicultural techniques can provide a diverse habitat for wildlife.
