Hardwood sawing methods to maximize value and volume: preliminary results

Preliminary results of a study to analyze the influence of defect location in hardwood logs on lumber value are presented. Results on 6 of the 24 logs comprising the complete study are analyzed. Logs were sawn into 1/4- inch cross-sectional disks and disk peripheries and included defects were digitized. Digitized disks were assembled into computerized logs and sawn by a sawing simulation. Logs were sawn at 24 positions by rotating each log at 15-degree intervals about their longitudinal axes. Value increases were 10.9 and 10.5 percent for live and grade sawing, respectively. It was found that log grades did not differ in percentage value increase. Lumber grade increase was largest for Selects lumber apparently by upgrading 2C and 3A lumber. Results of past studies showing that live sawing returns higher value and higher volume than grade sawing were substantiated by this study.
