Dendrochronology and dendroclimatology techniques were used to examine radial growth differences between paired “healthy” and “declined” oak trees in each of four locations across the Southeast. Growth differences between the two groups of trees were evident beginning in the mid-1930’s in Arkansas, Tennessee, and North Carolina, and beginning in the early 1950’s in South Carolina. In each case, initiation of growth decline was associated with a major drought or series of droughts.
