Is the US meeting its demand for fine hardwoods?

At the present time the United States is meeting its demand for fine hardwoods. However, the veneer and lumber industry has to work much harder to locate the type of trees required to produce the high quality veneer and lumber currently demanded by architects, interior and furniture designers, and furniture manufacturers. The costs associated with locating, extracting, and processing those materials are on the increase. With worldwide sources for timber disappearing as a result of poor or nonexistent forest management, demand on US resources is expected to increase. The government must take a more positive role in directing long-term timber management in the US. It must increase efforts to enhance good forest management for the sake of high quality fine hardwoods. It must support the management with a strong research program for fine hardwoods. The government must deal with a growing public ignorance of the merits of forest management over forest preservation. There is no excuse for the US to have a timber crisis, but one may occur because of the weak timber policies of the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s.’ The timber resources of the US are not so plentiful that we can afford to procrastinate another decade.
