Three unconventional methods for drying hardwood lumber are discussed. These are, radio frequency or dielectric drying, controlled solar energy drying, and acoustical-emission defect controlled drying. Radio-frequency drying is probably limited to specific high quality products because of technological and economic constraints. Controlled solar energy drying will become more important as the technology develops and as fossil fuels become more expensive. Acoustical-emission controlled drying shows intrinsic promise as a method for controlling drying of hardwoods based on reducing defects to a minimum consistent with maximum rate of drying.
