Tensile strength of high visual quality lumber appears to be affected by rate of loading. Ten times the standard rate had more effect than 25 times the standard rate both on average strength and on distribution of strength. Standards-writing groups should use caution in setting new standard rates of loading because this study shows that the weaker lumber of a grade may have much lower than standard measured tensile strength at more rapid rates of loading than at the standard rate.
