Specific gravity (SG), shrinkage, growth rate, and selected mechanical properties of Oglethorpe oak were determined. SG decreases with height in the tree. Compressive strengths are correlated with SG in green and air-dry conditions. Generally, compressive strength of the top log is slightly lower. Bending and shear properties of these oaks are presented. The hardness value of Oglethorpe oak is extremely high compared to the other white species, indicating its suitability for floor decking.
