Wood dowels are commonly used to join particleboard, medium- density fiberboard, and other wood composites together in many types of furniture construction yet little information is available concerning their holding strength in these materials. Research reported here indicates that plain and spiral-groove dowels give better face holding strength than do multi-groove dowels. Face and edge withdrawal strength increase in a linear fashion as depth of dowel embedment increases. Furthermore, face withdrawal strength is correlated with internal bond strength for particleboard and medium-density fiberboard. Predictive formulas for both face and edge withdrawal are given.
