Competitive funding was introduced into forest products research for the first time in 1985. In 1985, 28 grants for a total of $3,764,376 were awarded. Factors significant in successful and unsuccessful grants proposed are enumerated. Data on proposals submitted by area of research emphasis and awards by general research area and type of organization are given as is the legislative authority, procedures for submission, program scope, and evaluation process.
