Design of a Computer Based Controller-Recorder for An Experimental Dry Kiln

A 750 board foot capacity steam-heated lumber dry kiln was retrofitted with a computer based control system to replace the standard control instrument. The computer system, assembled using only commercially available equipment, provided benefits including more precise control of kiln conditions, automatic changes in the drying schedule, and the monitoring and recording of several kiln variables. The system is currently being tested under a variety of conditions with the objective of developing a reliable, low-cost computer based system which can be retrofit on existing commercial kilns.
