Laminated veneer lumber (LVL) has been commercially manufactured for several years. Most service applications have been for interior structural uses. Current growth is encompassing both exterior and interior uses. Exterior durability requirements for LVL involve some technological unknowns. Preservative treatments for exterior use are frequently used and their effects on modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity of Douglas-fir MICRO = LAM (LVL) are evaluated in this report. The problem of long-term durability predictions based on short-term records is addressed. The durability of LVL is assessed as a rate process. Durability test results of clear, solid-sawn lumber and LVL are compared. The challenges of obtaining better durability data and developing more reliable accelerated aging test techniques are presented.
