Sections of conventionally kiln-dried and pressure steam-dried yellow-poplar sapwood and red oak heartwood were prepared for standard tests of static bending, shear parallel to the grain, and side hardness. Significant differences between the two drying methods was found only in the shear test for red oak and in the static bending and shear tests for yellow-poplar. Reductions in modulus of elasticity, modulus of rupture, stress at the proportional limit, and maximum shear stress were at most 16 percent.
