Long-term planning for efficient timber resource utilization is a necessity in the forest products industry. Changes in the occurrence and severity of stem characteristics (e.g., sweep, crook, limbing features) over time will affect the potential of standing timber for various wood products; however, such information is often lacking. Data from southwestern ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa) forests are used to illustrate how the occurrence and severity of certain stem characteristics change over time. Predicted changes in timber volume suitable for various products, along with growth and yield information, can be used in optimization programs to make long-term timber resource decisions.
