A technique to derive cubic log scale deductions from product recovery information is presented. The idea is that deductions should reduce log scale volume such that the lumber recovery is that of a sound log of the same reduced volume. As an example, a percentage deduction for weather checks in logs cut from dead Engelmann spruce trees is calculated. Also, a measure of bias and accuracy is presented for the percentage deduction.
