A study was made to determine how much the drying time required for incense-cedar pencil slats could be reduced while still maintaining an acceptable level of degrade development. Reduction in the drying time was made using the drying effort theory developed by Bramhall. A total of nine different charges were dried in an experimental dry kiln. Two types of kiln schedule modifications were compared–Type I, where reductions in total drying time were concentrated in the first half of the schedule, and Type II, where changes were concentrated in the second half. Degrade variables included excessive shrinkage, bow-tie, final moisture content variation, and collapse. The results suggest the feasibility of reducing the drying time up to 25 percent with an increase only in collapse development. The amount of collapse in the runs ranged from zero to 1.92 percent. No significant difference was noted between the two types of schedule modifications.
