Fabricated building materials (particleboard, hardboard, and plywood) are susceptible to termite attack if preventive steps are not taken. Three insecticides (chlordane, heptachlor, and HCS-3260 [a modified chlordane that has all heptachlor removed]) were applied to the glue of particleboard, hardboard, and plywood. The samples of the three types of material were cut into 4-inch squares and were exposed to subterranean termite attack in two field exposures in southern Mississippi and the Panama Canal Zone. Samples were also exposed to drywood termites in a laboratory test in the Panama Canal Zone. After 4 years of evaluation, subterranean termite damage was greatest to plywood and least to hardboard. However, heptachlor (0.02%, 0.05%, and 0.10%) and chlordane (0.05%, 0.10%, and 0.20%) protected plywood structurally. Drywood termites damaged treated particleboard only at low treatment levels (0.05% and 0.10%) of chlordane and HCS-3260 and damaged treated hardboard only at the lowest treatment level (0.05 %) of chlordane.
