Theoretical Analysis of Yield and Strength Potential of Two-Ply Lumber

Hardwood two-ply lumber consists of laminas in which the defects have been repaired by plugging. The laminate is reduced to furniture dimension in the rough mill without consideration of defects. If one face of a resulting cutting is repaired, chances are high that the other face is clear. This yield problem is analyzed by means of computer simulation. Greatest yield gains are obtained when low and high quality laminas are paired. In two-ply softwood dimension lumber it is assumed that, due to the random combination of laminas, defects will occur only in one-half of any cross section. Bending strength ratios calculated on that basis show that even the largest edge knots will not degrade the dimension below No. 1 Structural.
