Research on rough mill yields in the production situation comparing yields from a rip-first and crosscut first line indicated that for the cooperating firm 5/4 northern red oak, No. 1 Common grade could be processed in either line without difference in yield occurring, which was due solely to the rough mill line. Overall yields were within 2 percent. Overall yields were within 4 percent of the yields predicted from USDA Forest Service yield tables. However, there was a significantly higher yield–7 percent–of the longest cutting (49-in.) on the rip-first line. Analysis of material and labor costs during the study indicated slightly lower labor costs on the rip line, but these were offset by slightly higher material costs, per volume of cutting, than for the crosscut line.
