A survey of lumber distributing firms revealed that, although fungal attack may be apparent on their stored stock, most such firms do not consider such attack to be a serious problem. Experimentation showed that a dip treatment with a commercial blue stain control chemical applied at four times the concentration recommended for stain control adequately protected green, surfaced Douglas-fir and white fir lumber from surface fungal growth during storage in solid piles for periods up to 6 months in the San Francisco Bay region. No significant loss in toughness or maximum load in bending was found in nontreated boards stored for 6 months under these relatively mild conditions. Greater deterioration could be expected under more severe conditions typical of other regions.
