One-inch-thick black walnut heartwood boards were press-dried under three drying schedules: 1) continuous drying (CD), 2) cyclic step drying (CSD), and 3) variable step drying (VSD). The results showed that step drying (CSD and VSD) significantly improved the quality of press-dried 4/4 black walnut heartwood boards by reducing surface checking, collapse, and honeycombing as compared to continuous drying. VSD was used to approximate CSD. The results showed that there was little difference between CSD and VSD.
