The forests, one of our major renewable resources, are now undergoing critical examination to assess their potential in terms of energy, chemicals, medicines, and food in addition to the traditional uses. The extent of this potential depends on the biomass, fresh or dry weight, and the biomass productivity of the forests. In a test on the public lots in Maine it was established that a biomass inventory can be made in conjunction with a volume inventory with a little additional field sampling to include the small trees and shrubs species, as the additional cost is only about 5 percent of the cost of the volume inventory.
