Status and Prospects of Residue Utilization in Board Product Manufacture in the United States and Canada

Vast volumes of wood residues are created in North American forest harvesting and wood processing industries. It is estimated that forest harvesting residues amounting to at least 138 million tons of wood and 22 million tons of bark are generated, and in primary and secondary processing, residues of 94 million tons are generated annually. About 75 percent of the primary mill residues are presently utilized, primarily for pulp and energy. Only about 14 percent is utilized in the wood-base panel industries. Thus, the potential exists for much more residue utilization if basic economic problems of harvesting, transportation, and adhesive supplies can be solved.
