Various techniques developed in this century for incising round and sawed wood, as well as studies on the effects of incising both softwoods and hardwoods, are reviewed. The review shows that incising wood products enhances preservative penetration and retention in heartwood of some species and reduces serious checking in some products. Incising has little or no effect on the rate of drying or the ultimate dryness. Incising caused only minor reductions in some strength properties of timbers and large roundwood, but laminated beams, dimension lumber, and hardwood posts were significantly weakened by this process. In view of the increasing use of pressure-treated wood in engineered systems, much more research is needed on the effect of incising on the strength properties of treated structural wood products.
