Hardboard from Municipal Solid Waste Using Phenolic Resin Or Black Liquor as Binder

Techniques were developed for making wet-process hardboard of standard quality from secondary fibers reclaimed from municipal solid waste. Using 1 percent wax sizing agent and either 3 percent phenolic resin or 11 percent black liquor precipitate (BLP), physical and mechanical properties of the board were comparable to those of board made from virgin fibers. Because of a greater tendency of adhesive migration and the slower drainage of secondary fiber during the pressing operation, a wire screen on each side of the board was necessary. With heat treatment in place of wax sizing, standard hardboard could also be made from secondary fibers using either 6 percent phenolic resin or 18 percent BLP. However, the use of wax sizing instead of heat treatment for improving board quality is believed to be more economical.
