Composite structural members using veneer faces over particleboard cores have the potential of increasing the volume of structural products derived from forest stands. The modulus of elasticity (MOE) of the veneer and the distribution characteristics of this property are critical to composite member design. Veneer from 39 trees from central Alabama was analyzed for MOE and specific gravity. MOE of loblolly pine veneer was found to be normally distributed. Veneer MOE was related to its position within the stem. Veneer peeled from the second blocks (8.5 ft. to 17 ft. above the stump cut) in the stem had the highest average MOE; that from the first blocks (between the stump and 8.5 ft.) had the lowest. The stiffest veneer was peeled from the outside of the blocks. Veneer peeled from near the core had the lowest average modulus of elasticity and was more variable in this property than veneer from other locations. Veneer peeled from trees 16 inches diameter breast height (dbh) and smaller had higher average MOE than that from larger trees. Modulus of elasticity was not well correlated with tree dbh. Veneer specific gravity and veneer MOE were not closely correlated.
