Log grading and peeling trials on Khaya ivorensis have shown that plywood bolt quality is a primary factor affecting veneer grade yields. A grade 1 plywood bolt (Association Technique Des Bois Tropicaux log grading rules) will yield up to 31.90 percent face grade veneer while a grade 3 bolt yields less than 10 percent. Log to bolt conversion trials have shown that bolt quality can be improved if wise crosscutting and pre-treatment techniques are employed. Low grade logs can be up-graded during bolt manufacture by as much as 80 percent by wise handling. The consequent effect on veneer grade yields may be significant in that if, on crosscutting, a proportion of grade 1/2 plywood bolts can be cut from a grade 2/2 log the increase in yield of face veneer may be almost 10 percent.
