Although the structure of an experiment will be determined largely by its physical nature, statistical considerations are necessary for determining the level of replication required for definitive results to be obtained. In a complex experimental situation, computer simulation is a useful tool for deriving the sampling distributions of the statistics of interest. To illustrate this, details are presented of how computer simulation was used in the designing of an investigation of the duration-of-load effect on lumber strength. The underlying principles can be applied to many other situations in forest products research and elsewhere.
