The particleboard industry in the United States experienced rapid growth through the 60’s and early 70’s. The compounded annual growth rate from 1963 through 1973 was 21.6 percent. This rate is expected to decline to a compounded annual rate of 3 to 5 percent. In 1980, production should be between 4.4 and 5.0 billion square feet (3/4-inch basis). New market growth is attributed to increased use in the furniture and housing industries. In 1980, housing starts will be from 1.8 to 2.2 million, mobile home shipments will be from 450 to 550 thousand units, and the Federal Reserve Bulletin furniture production index will be around 165 (1967 = 100). Major factors affecting increase in board costs, raw materials and transportation, are analyzed. Expect new plant growth in the North Central and Eastern states.
