During an inspection of a wood foundation built in 1963, several decayed members were discovered. Increment borings were taken from the foundation as well as from leftover material that had been protected under cover, not in contact with the soil. The borings were analyzed by two separate methods for penta content. All of the samples, including those taken from the protected members, indicated penta retention far below recommended levels. It has therefore been concluded that the original material had not been properly treated. The foundation has been repaired by replacing the decayed members with new material treated at or above the present recommended standards of 0.50 lbs./cu.ft. Because wood foundations are now being promoted for house construction, it should be stated as strongly as possible that quality control is essential.
