Potential Emission Reduction in Veneer Dryers By Boron Compounds

Experiments were conducted to measure the effectiveness of borax and boric acid in reducing the loss of fatty and resin acids from Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco) resin during heating at 180?C using quantitative gas chromatography. The results showed that boric acid had little effect whereas borax substantially lowered their loss. An experiment using white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss) resin again showed that borax was effective in reducing the loss of fatty and resin acids during heating. To study the effect of borax on veneer-drier haze formation, Douglas-fir resin and Douglas- fir resin-borax samples were heated respectively in a thermal gravimetric analyzer apparatus at 9?C/min, in the presence of ozone. The presence of borax in the Douglas-fir resin sample caused the temperature at which haze formation occurred to shift 30?C higher.
